| The legend of Thann, marked by poetry, reflects an origin going back to the Middle Ages. According to this legend, Bishop Saint-Thiébaut died in Gubbio (a town in Umbria, Italy) in 1160. Having distributed all his fortune to the poor, he promised his servant from Lorraine that he could have his bishop’s ring after he died, as a reward for his faithful service. But when the servant from Lorraine tried to remove the ring from the bishop’s hand, he also tore off the right thumb. He placed them in a socket in his pilgrim’s staff. |

After crossing the Alps, in 1161 he arrived at the present site of the church, which was then covered in firs. He propped his stick against one of them and fell asleep. On waking up, he wanted to continue his journey but noticed that his stick seemed to have taken root.
At the same time, the Comte de Ferrette, lord of the castle at Engelbourg, whose ruins dominate the town, saw three lights above the tree. The pilgrim told him that he was bearing a relic. The Count saw this wonder as a sign of the will of God. He vowed to build a chapel and the stick was immediately uprooted. |
